The Fourth Annual Father’s Day 5K at Margaritas is Sunday, June 16, 2013. Registration for the event is now open. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are invited to celebrate fatherhood at this family-friendly run/walk presented by Ross Furniture of Dover. Proceeds from the event help the most vulnerable members of our community gain access to desperately needed health care by minimizing financial barriers to doctors, dentists and mental health professionals through Goodwin Community Health.

The Father’s Day 5K is a fun race, on a certified course, complete with margaritas-style food and fiesta. Participants celebrate fatherhood by wearing a necktie to honor the dads, brothers and sons who touch their lives.

Margaritas goes all out to make this a fun 5K and celebrated Father’s Day tradition. “A great morning run or walk in honor of Dad followed by a fun Margaritas style fiesta is a wonderful way to kick off Father’s Day,” says Lara Willard, Race Director and Community Relations Director for Goodwin Community Health. “The necktie theme has really taken off as well. Every year we are seeing more attendees wearing ties.”

Beginner and seasoned runners/walkers can visit http://goodwinch.org/fathers-day-5k-2013/ or http://www.active.com/running/dover-nh/fathers-day-5k-margaritas-2013 for details and registration. Registration forms can be completed online, mailed in or dropped-off at Margarita’s or Ross Furniture. The first two hundred adults to register get a free race T-shirt. Same day registration is available beginning at 7:30am. The race kicks-off at 8:30am. Day of registration is twenty-five dollars for but advanced registration is only twenty dollars for adults and just five dollars for children under twelve. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to collect donations and raise funds for the event by setting up their own fundraising page to collect donations when they register for the event.

The top male and female runner will win a twenty-five dollar gift certificate to Runners Alley. Twenty-five dollar gift certificates to Philbrick’s Sports will go to the top males and females in each of the eleven age divisions: 14 and under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 plus.

Ross Furniture of Dover is the 2013 underwriter of the Father’s Day 5k at Margaritas and has generously donated a La-Z-Boy Recliner door prize. Additional sponsors include: Measured Progress, Garrison Women’s Health Center, Pelmac Industries Inc., Shaheen & Gordon Law Firm, Holy Rosary Credit Union, Homewood Suites of Dover, Northeast Credit Union, Philbrick Sports, and WERZ 107.1.

Goodwin Community Health is currently seeking donations of used and unwanted neckties. Ties can be dropped off at Goodwin Community Health, 311 Route 108 in Somersworth, or donated on race-day.

The board of directors of Bi-State Primary Care Association presented awards to New Hampshire residents singled out for their outstanding contributions to improving access to high quality health care in New Hampshire at Bi-State’s 2013 Primary Care Conference held in Fairlee, Vermont.

The Community Service Award, honoring individuals whose volunteer efforts have made a significant impact on vulnerable populations, was presented to Dr. Michael Thompson of Goodwin Community Health in Somersworth. In presenting the award, Janet Atkins, executive director, said, “Dr. Thompson has been with Goodwin Community Health since he left the Medical Residency Program in Concord ten years ago. Although he is a great physician and his patients speak very highly of him, he has done much more than providing excellent medical care to our underserved populations. Dr. Thompson owns a software company and his expertise in this area has helped Federally Qualified Health Centers not only locally, but nationwide. Dr. Thompson works tirelessly with the Community Health Access Network to help create new forms, screens, and to troubleshoot software problems. He has designed templates to help providers become more efficient and incorporate best practices. Any new form he creates, he posts on his computer company website and anyone is allowed to use these – for free. In 2004, we added oral health care to our practice, but our electronic health record program did not have any screens for dental at the time. Dr. Thompson volunteered to create all the screens, including tooth charts and reports. We still use this system today. About five years ago, we had to reduce staff hours due to budget restraints, but Dr. Thompson was concerned that if we reduced nursing coverage, patients wouldn’t receive the care they needed. For a full year, he covered the portion of salaries that were going to be reduced. When we initiated our capital campaign in 2010 for our new facility, Dr. Thompson’s company was the first to donate money toward our new building. Despite all that he has done for our patients, and other FQHCs, Dr. Thompson is soft spoken and humble. He doesn’t like recognition or being the center of attention. Yet, I can’t help but bring his donations and support of the FQHCs to everyone’s attention so that he will receive this well-deserved recognition.”

Established in 1986, Bi-State Primary Care Association is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The annual Primary Care Conference features federal, state, and regional speakers and attracts a large audience of primary care executives, clinicians, and senior staff. For more information and to review this year’s Primary Care Conference Program, please visit: www.bistatepca.org.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance announced that Goodwin Community Health of Somersworth has received Recognition from the Patient-Centered Medical Home 2011 (PCMH 2011) program for using evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly coordinated care and long-term participative relationships.

The patient-centered medical home is a model of care emphasizing care coordination and communication to transform primary care into “what patients want it to be.” Research shows that medical homes can lead to higher quality and lower costs, and improve patients’ and providers’ reported experiences of care.

To receive recognition, which is valid for three years, Goodwin Community Health demonstrated the ability to meet the program’s key elements embodying characteristics of the medical home.
