As a result of a partnership between Goodwin Community Health and the New Hampshire Optometric Association, Charles LaFreniere OD of LaFreniere Eyecare in Somersworth generously opened his practice to Goodwin Community Health patients on Saturday, September 21, 2013 for a free diabetic eye clinc. Seventeen uninsured diabetic patients who were overdue for their annual dilated eye exam were seen. These patients could not have otherwise afforded an eye exam. They received free blood glucose test strips at the clinic, thanks to a “Healthy Eyes Healthy People” grant sponsored by the American Optometric Association.

With the help of Dr. Charles LaFreniere and Dr. James Belanger, fifteen patients were discovered to have an abnormal eye exam—something that may have gone undetected without this free clinic opportunity. Diagnoses included diabetic retinopathy, hypertensive retionpathy, cataracts, atopic conjunctivitis and others. The patients with abnormal results were scheduled for follow-ups at Goodwin’s next diabetic eye clinic on Saturday, April 12, 2014.
