Big doin’s at new digs in Somersworth: Soldati, Goodwin, Daigle honored by Executive Council at new Goodwin health center

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

SOMERSWORTH — Mayor Lincoln Soldati, Avis Goodwin and former Hilltop School teacher Joanne Daigle, among others, were honored with commendations by Gov. Lynch and Councilor Daniel St. Hilaire on Wednesday morning as a part of the Executive Council’s session held Wednesday at Goodwin Community Health.

A commendation is an honor requested by a member of the community or council for another member of the community to honor their work and dedication to the state.

Soldati, Goodwin and Daigle were chosen to receive commendations at Wednesday’s meeting due to Councilor St. Hilaire’s choice to hold the meeting in his hometown of Somersworth, the community where each of them have made an impact through some type of service.

“I grew up here, my father grew up here, his father grew here and his father grew up here,” said St. Hilaire. “So it’s just me coming back here to my stomping grounds, you could say.”

The meeting was hosted in the employee cafeteria of the new Goodwin center, which recently celebrated its grand opening with a Tri Chamber event last Thursday evening. Among those in attendance at the meeting included Goodwin Community Executive Director Janet Atkins, Somersworth Police Chief Dean Crombie and Somersworth Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jennifer Soldati.

All of the members of the Executive Council were also present, including St. Hilaire, from District 2, Christopher Sununu, representing District 3, Ray Wieczorek, District 4, David Whaler, District 5, and Ray Burton, District 1.

Mayor Soldati was honored for not only his time as mayor of Somersworth, but for his almost 20 years of service as the Strafford County Attorney. Soldati was more than humbled by his recognition.

“Thank you all so much,” said Soldati.

Daigle taught third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grades at Hilltop School for 28 years, from 1977-2008.

Avis Goodwin, whose award was accepted by her daughter, Valerie, was honored for founding the Avis Goodwin Center in 1969, after seeing a need in the community for prenatal care for the underinsured and uninsured.

“I’m very proud and grateful to accept this award on behalf of my mother,” said Valerie Goodwin. “I think my mother would agree the most that the accolades belong most to the dedicated staff. Thank you for your continued support.”

After presenting the commendations, councilors dove right into their regularly scheduled meeting where they approved almost 80 items of new business, including agenda items presented by the Departments of Information Technology, Administrative Services, Transportation and Safety.

The next Executive Council meeting will be Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10 a.m. at a location yet to be announced.

Attends grand opening of Goodwin Community Health Center in Somersworth

SOMERSWORTH — Chamber members, local business owners, Somersworth employees, Congressman Frank Guinta — even the health center’s namesake herself — showed up Thursday evening to celebrate the grand opening of the Goodwin Community Health center at its new Route 108 location.

The Tri-Chamber event hosted more than 200 business owners others from the Somersworth, Rochester and Dover communities, including Somersworth High principal Sharon Lampros, Somersworth City Manager Bob Belmore, Somersworth Mayor Lincoln Soldati and Somersworth Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jennifer Soldati.

The two-hour event featured a drink bar, appetizers, live music, a series of raffles and even a gourmet cupcake display featuring treats from JD’s Sweets N’ Treats in Rochester.

While many attendees mingled with other business owners and town officials, tours of the newly opened center continued in the background. Laughter from all around the lobby area could be heard clearly over the live guitar and band music being played from behind the receptionist’s desk in the lobby.

Right before 6 p.m., the room was brought to attention when 92-year-old Avis Goodwin was wheeled into the building.

Her daughter, Valerie, looked on at her mother as she posed for pictures near the buffet line.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Valerie Goodwin. “I’m sorry, I’m getting emotional. It’s just fantastic to see her here for the first time. She would have never imagined this. She saw a need in the community and was at a position at Wentworth-Douglass at the time where she could enlist others to help her.”

Valerie Goodwin is, of course, talking about how her mother founded Goodwin Community Health in the 1960s after seeing many woman being turned away from prenatal care at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital because of their lack of insurance.

The director of social services at the time, Avis Godwin saw the need for prenatal care, regardless of insurance status. More than 45 years later, her foresight to see a need blossomed from just prenatal care, into dental, primary care and mental health, among other services.

“I think many in the community think we’re just primary care, when really, we’re so much more than that and we have far more reaching effects in the community,” said Public Relations Manager of Goodwin, Lara Willard. “This event is our opportunity to welcome local business owners so they can see how we serve the community.”

Goodwin’s three-tiered care model, which offers primary, mental and dental care to all its patients, is a model practiced by only one other community health care center in New Hampshire.

The model allows an individual receiving primary care, to also have access to a social worker and a psychiatric nurse practitioner for mental needs that can’t wait to be treated while a patient may sit on a waiting list for a licensed psychiatrist.

Jennifer Soldati said the new location of the center is perfect for the community because it’s so accessible.

“It’s much more efficient, it makes perfect business sense and it saves a lot of time,” she said. “It’s easily accessible.”

World Breastfeeding Week Now Celebrated in 3D

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Concord, NH – Every year during the first week of August countries, states, organizations, and communities celebrate and encourage breastfeeding. The theme for World Breastfeeding Week in 2011 is focusing on engaging and mobilizing youth with the slogan “Talk to me! Breastfeeding—A 3D Experience.” Breastfeeding support is often seen as two-dimensional: time (from pre-pregnancy to weaning) and place (the home, community, health care system, etc.). Neither has much impact without a third dimension—communication!

The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Section, recently released the brief Breastfeeding: New Hampshire 2011 (HOT LINK ONCE POSTED). It lists successes and challenges that many women encounter while breastfeeding during baby’s first year. Successes include ongoing support from family, friends, and healthcare professionals. Challenges include the community environment and the workplace both as crucial factors for achieving individual breastfeeding goals. The data brief identifies the risks associated with formula feeding and early weaning from breastfeeding. For example, the risk of acute ear infection is 100% higher among exclusively formula-fed infants than those who are exclusively breastfed during the first six months.

Three out of four women in New Hampshire initiate breastfeeding after birth while only one in four are still breastfeeding at one year. World Breastfeeding Week is an optimal time to raise awareness of the health and economic benefits of breastfeeding and to educate the public about the risks of not breastfeeding. Communication is an essential part of protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding.

“It is important that mothers and families get all the information they need to be successful at breastfeeding,” said Dr. José Montero. “Good nutrition is essential for proper development of infants and breastfeeding is the perfect way to ensure a healthy start for all infants.”

During World Breastfeeding Week, local WIC programs will be hosting celebrations at their clinics to honor mothers and families. Activities include outdoor picnics, community

walks, certificate ceremonies, and breastfeeding themed bulletin boards throughout the community.

Each activity recognizes the mothers’ success at breastfeeding while creating awareness for breastfeeding support and promotion in the community. Goodwin Communiy Health on the grow: New name, location, expanded service, and taking new patients

Dr. Steven Molnar Gabor, greets patient Billie Jo Williams at Goodwin Community Health in Somersworth Wednesday.

SOMERSWORTH — Goodwin Community Health, located in its new building at 311 Route 108, is now accepting new patients for the first time since September 2010.

The community healthcare center, formerly Avis Goodwin Community Health Center, has hired two additional physicians, as well as added an additional dental laboratory, allowing it to accept 3,500 new patients into its primary care network and 500 new patients into its dental network.

The center is hoping its move into a new, larger and more updated building on Route 108, as well as its three-tiered care model, will bring in new patients.

Goodwin’s three-tiered care model, which offers primary, mental and dental care to all its patients, is a model practiced by only one other community healthcare center in New Hampshire.

The model allows an individual receiving primary care, to also have access to a social worker and a psychiatric nurse practitioner for mental needs that can’t wait to be treated while a patient may sit on a waiting list for a licensed psychiatrist.

“We’re able to care for the whole person,” said Marketing and Communications Manager Lara Willard.

Currently, Goodwin cares for 8,000 patients within all of its services, which includes prenatal care, as well as the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Within the primary care department, patients are served within what Goodwin refers to as a “pod,” which contains a staff of a primary care physician, a social worker, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and between one and two nurse practitioners, depending on the pod.

Currently Goodwin employs 127 individuals, including 77 full-time employees. The center depends heavily on volunteers, who log approximately 6,900 hours yearly.

Goodwin also transitioned into a paperless stage about three years ago, including its implementation of the electronic care record, which allows individuals within the primary care, mental health and dental regions of the facility to view a patient’s record with a click of a button.

The electronic care record also has added benefits, including the ability for a physician to view drug interactions in a tab on the care record. This transition affords for better quality care, according to Executive Director Janet Atkins.

Along with providing a better space for patients, the new building also offers more room for the employees, including a board room, a dual conference room and cafeteria, and a balcony space which faces the back parking lot.

Funding for the new facility came mainly with a grant from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.

New Hampshire competes in national contest to help pregnant women and new mothers

Goodwin Community Health aims to reach New Hampshire moms throughout
the state with text4baby program

Somersworth, NH, May 10, 2011 — In honor of Mother’s Day and National Women’s Health Week, Goodwin Community Health (formerly Avis Goodwin Community Health Center) announced today its participation in the text4baby State Enrollment Contest, a national competition to enroll pregnant women and new mothers in the text4baby program.

Text4baby, the country’s first free, health education program in the form of text messages, provides timely tips and expert advice sent directly to the cell phones of pregnant women and new moms. Pregnant women and new mothers who text “BABY” (or “BEBE” for Spanish) to 511411 receive weekly text messages, timed to their due date or their baby’s birth date through the baby’s first year. The messages, which have been developed by government and non-profit health experts like the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, American Academy of Pediatrics, and March of Dimes, deal with nutrition, immunization and birth defect prevention, among other topics.

The United States has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the industrialized world. Each year in the U.S. more than 500,000 babies are born prematurely and an estimated 28,000 children die before their first birthday. In response to this national public health crisis, the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) launched text4baby in partnership with founding sponsor Johnson & Johnson, Voxiva, CTIA-The Wireless Foundation, Grey Healthcare Group (a WPP company), the nation’s wireless carriers, and the U.S. government.

In its first year, text4baby has already reached more than 160,000 users thanks to its unprecedented public-partnership. The goal of the text4baby State Enrollment Contest is to reach twice as many users through healthy competition among the states and engagement of the over 500 text4baby Outreach Partners.

The top three states that have enrolled the most users in text4baby between May 10 and October 20, 2011 will be announced at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The prize for each of the winning states will be a sponsored luncheon/press event for text4baby partners in that state.

“We are pleased to partner with the text4baby initiative to give expectant and new mothers critical information they need so they can take charge of their health and the health of their babies,” said Sandra Tozier, WIC Supervisor for Goodwin Community Health.

Text4baby is working towards a goal of reaching 1 million mothers by the end of 2012. “The text4baby State Enrollment Contest is a way for States to actively participate in making sure that the millions of pregnant women and new moms across the country get the most important information they need to ensure their child’s healthy development,” said Judy Meehan, CEO of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition.

State Enrollment Contest Sponsors include:

o U.S. Department of Agriculture
o National WIC Association
o Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP)
o National Healthy Start Association (NHSA)
o March of Dimes
o National Association of County and State Health Officials (NACCHO)
o CityMatCH

These organizations will be promoting the contest to their extensive membership. For more info go to www.text4baby.org.
